So I've failed to mention that all the super efficient planning of this part of the trip was NOT due to me ...
my sweet friend Mandy hooked me up with all the research she'd done for her family to come to the city (only a week or so after us - so bummed we weren't there together!).
And she recommended this book - it was stellar. Seriously. Best little resource ever!
Anyway, we got up very bright and early Saturday morning and headed down to the Statue of Liberty.
We had tickets to the first ferry out there that day.
It was a beautiful ride across the river.
Good morning Miss Liberty!
When we got off on Liberty Island, we each got a set of headphones and a little recorder thingy.
Not sure of the technical name, but it basically had tons of info about the Statue that you could listen to as you walked around the museum and the park.
Jacob absolutely loved it!!
Heading into the museum at the base of the statue ...
as with most significant places these days, there were metal detectors and scanners involved.
A replica of her torch ... it was huge!
And her face ... kinda creepy ...
The boys taking a break ... on her toes.
So much fascinating info on how the statue all came about ... and how significant it was to so many immigrants as they crossed the ocean to come to America.
I really don't think we can possibly understand the magnitude of that for so many ...
Climbing up to the pedestal ... that's as far as we could go.
Tickets were sold out to go to her crown.
And when I saw the windy staircase and heard how far it was up there,
I was glad that we couldn't go!!
Some of the interior structure of the statue.
Taking in the view ...
Back down bottom ... some cool shots of just how big she is!
Manhattan in the distance ...
So so glad to see her up close ...
she's a beauty!!
