Winter Jam (aka Lake Burton) '13

I seriously love being friends with planners.
And adventurers.
And other families with kiddos the same age as ours.
And other moms and dads that have the same struggles as us.
And other believers that are just trying to walk in a manner worthy of the calling.

Winter Jam is a way for me to enjoy all these things.
Although the families that go are not all our friends,
there's just something about getting away and the concentrated time that can happen with a retreat.

This year, our fabulous travel agent (ha!  not really but she could be) Mandy
rented a house for all of us at Lake Burton.
It was absolutely perfect.
Super large.
Lots of bedrooms.
Lots of baths.
A den both upstairs and down.
And the view ... oh goodness.
The view was spectacular.

We arrived on Valentine's Day to a delicious meal of prime rib
and sides.

And we even had Valentine goodies on our beds to greet us ...
candy bags for the kiddos and some other 'treats' for the adults!  Ha!

After dinner, the Dickinson's headed up the 'Not-so-Newlywed' Game ...
while the kiddos were either in the bed or watching a movie in the basement.

The boys working on their answers ...

... the ladies working on theirs.

Just for history-sake:  Bo and I won the game!
Forgot the victory pic!

Friday consisted of a lazy morning,
Mike D. and the other dad's attempting to scale down the mountain to the lake
(it was very short-lived),
and then a group drive and hike to a waterfall.
Mandy has now earned herself the title 'Waterfall Whisperer',
as she can find a waterfall on a hike better than anyone we know!

When we left the hike to head back to the house,
we were thrilled to drive through some snow!
We toured the road around Lake Burton and feasted our eyes
on some of the most gorgeous homes ever
(which had docks the size of what I'd call a 'normal' sized house!),
and then headed back up the mountain to our place.

Here's just one of the those ridiculously gorgeous homes ...

And here's evidence of the on and off snow we had all afternoon -
it was a complete white-out at times!

See those itty-bitty flakes on the chair?!

Saturday morning was much the same,
with a yummy breakfast and then a plan to hike Tallulah Gorge.

Yep - I learned that gorge = a ridiculous amount of steps to the bottom
that must then be climbed back up!

It was a beautiful, cool, sunny day.
Perfect for hiking and not getting too hot.

Not all the fams, but most.
Not sure how I missed the Henderson's and Hartsock's.
But Ben ... the term 'photo bomb' was invented especially for him!

Sunday we enjoyed another yummy breakfast
and then the kids had a worship service that Mike D. headed up.
Then the adults had a devotional time that Bo and Mike D. headed up.
It was a great time of challenging us to simplify.
And working out the messy details of what that means.
(which, by the way, we are still working out ...)

Goodness gracious, we love these families.
It's all, once again, evidence of God's great grace to us.
Constantly receiving blessings that we don't deserve.
Over and over again.

So grateful.

Seaside Girls Trip

I always wondered what these little round, blue stickers meant on the the back of cars.

This year's girls' trip gave me the answer.
Those stickers stand for a 30 mile stretch along the Gulf Coast
where you'll find adorable little beach towns like
Seaside, Watercolor, & Rosemary Beach.

I feel so enlightened now!!

8 of us girls packed in the Suburban,
headed south,
grabbed Amy from the airport,
and spent 3 days soaking up girl time,
alone time, sand time, eating time, biking time and laughing time.

My fave on the trip? (besides the girls, of course!)
Biking everywhere.  Literally.
There were fun trails all over -
you could go pavement, or off road.
You could stay in Seaside or take all these fun cut-throughs
to other neighborhoods.
LOVE!

The whole trip was extremely therapeutic.
And completely enjoyed.

Lemontree ... our adorable little home.
Notice all those bikes!
Loved the line of old Airstreams that housed food, hawaiian ice, treats galore!

We enjoyed dinner here one night ...  scrumptious!
Michelle, the one with extensive knowledge (and love for) all things Seaside
had said that we'd have to have coffee & stroll the plaza area.  Done.

Stacey & I stopping on a group bike ride.
I mean ... it was gorgeous!

More of an 'off road' trail ...

... even bridges!

Although I probably will always be an Atlantic girl,
the Gulf sure is gorgeous!

So, this is my initiation pic.
I missed the girls' trip last year and part of that trip was wearing
fake eyelashes to dinner.
So guess what I had to do??!
Ever had a butterfly land on your eyelids?
That's kinda what it felt like!!

After dinner, Mandy & Amy had gotten these yummy cupcakes
to celebrate my 40th.
So sweet!

Love these girls so much!
Huge, huge thanks to Mandy for all the planning.

Alisa Pognant & Mandy Henderson)

Had to include what Mandy put in the guest book -
notice it's signed,
'9 Women of Good Character Who Have Seen Their Better Days.'
That's a nod to Dietrich Boenhoeffer.
(from one of our book club reads)
Don't we sound sophisticated??!!!  :)

Highlands ... Fun Times!

When asked, once again, to join 4 other families on a weekend getaway,
we didn't even hesitate to say yes -
I might even have squealed a bit ... possibly.

Last trip was 2 years ago to Big Canoe.
Refresh your memory here.

Anyway, location was changed this year to Highlands.
We've never been and were super excited.

Let's see ... we had:
5 families,
in one house,
with 5 bedrooms,
3 bathrooms,
1 busy kitchen
(that was obnoxiously full of food!),
a huge screened in porch with fireplace,
and lots of wide open space outside to roam in.

B-L-A-S-T!

Some hiking with the moms & kids behind the house ...

Fun swing in the yard!

Remote Controlled Cars = new hubby hobby ...
and son hobby too!

The front porch made a great viewing/driving spot for the RC cars ...
One plus to this hobby compared to others:
no bodily harm can come -
unless you are hit by a car in the shin!

I even got in on the action -
but it was way harder than it looks!

Fun games in the yard ...

A whole group hike -
thanks to Chad for providing transportation!
We were in the baaa-aaa-ck woods!

Oh Ben ... always have to have a silly shot ...

Alexis enjoyed the hike as well!

This awesome waterfall was our destination ...
you can see how little our group is compared to the fall ...
amazing!

That doggone boot didn't slow Blaine-o down one bit!

Yep - getting a sip!

Caught this sweet shot of Mandy & Amy ...
worth 1,000 words! :)

Other activities -
countless games of War and Slap Jack!

Whitney showing off her mad reading skillz to Bowdie ...

On the last night,
we enjoyed a campfire and some s'mores ...
(the following pictures are totally pirated off my sweet friend mandy's blog!)

Matt, Alisa & Alexis

The Dickinson Crew
Mike, Carrie, Jacob, Lilly, Johnny, & Michael Jr.

Ben, Amy, Whitney & Lindsey

Chad, Mandy, Luke, Kallie, & Cole

**Mandy planned this whole shin-dig.
I love having friends that will plan and then invite me to tag along!**

Some fun with Mandy's camera, her tripod and
a reeeee-aaaaa-lllll-yyyy slow shutter speed ...

Since we'll be vacationing with the Hendersons (& Hartsocks)
this summer,
don't think you won't see this kind of photo-shooting again!
We're making plans!!

Nightly devotions with music ...
thanks Mike & Jacob!

Fun times, fun memories ...

left refreshed & encouraged as a parent, wife & friend ...
the kind of refreshing that can only be found by being sharpened by
other believers ...

so blessed!
